Presenting your achievements on your Resume

How to write about your key achievements in your Resume

The job market is increasingly competitive so it is essential that your Resume stands out.  Therefore, detailing your key achievements will support you in standing out from the competition.  We have summarised how best to include these with some examples below.

Take some time to think about what these could be. Think of examples which could include when you have increased revenue, received recognition from your company or clients, supported or led change, saved costs, enhanced a process, trained and mentored others or led/assisted with a system implementation.

The next thing to consider is how to write these succinctly. You should give enough information to demonstrate the achievement but not too much where it can make your Resume become very long or making it so short that is loses its’ impact. You should also be careful not to generalise. So make sure to use metrics.

For example:

Continually exceeded targets and gained increased client accounts’ is not as impactful as ‘Continually exceeded targets year on year increasing client accounts by 23%, achieving additional revenue of $56K’.

Other examples

If you are not dealing with financials it can be trickier to quantify your key achievements in your Resume but can you utilise other examples including:

  • Projects managed (include the size, time frames and if delivered to specification and quality standards).
  • Turning a client/customer relationship around (you can use customer satisfaction)
  • If you have saved time (include how much if possible) by improving or introducing a process.
  • Training and coaching a team member and perhaps they achieved a promotion or increased their performance?
  • Assisting with implementing a new system, did this lead to performance improvements, did you help train others or did it reduce time to complete certain tasks.

Whatever examples you use, make sure you are specific as possible to fully showcase the part you played (for small companies if you feel figures are low then use percentages as this is just as effective).

Recruiters can make reasonable assumptions about what your responsibilities are in each role but they will not be able to do this with your achievements so this will set you apart from everyone else. This is what makes you unique and will give you a competitive edge.
