Writing your Professional Profile on your Resume

How to position your Professional Profile

The professional profile is one of the most important sections of your Resume. It sets the tone of the document, acting as your elevator pitch so it needs to grab the recruiter’s attention.  Tailoring this correctly can also assist with getting past ATS which means it needs to showcase your skills and experience succinctly.

So how should you compile this section?

This section is probably the trickiest as it needs to be sharp and focused. You should aim for about six to eight sentences depending on how extensive your career is. If you are still at University or just graduated, you can make this around four to six sentences.

Make sure to write the Professional Profile in the third person and avoid the use of “I” so this is consistent with the rest of your Resume.  To be clear you should not refer to yourself by your “first name”.  It can be helpful to mirror job adverts so you can ensure you are capturing the key elements required of the roles you are applying for.

The Opener

You need to start with an effective opener which explains who you are (as a professional) and your background so the recruiter can quickly see that you have a job title they are interested in as well as the industries you have worked within.  See below:

The Middle

Summarise your skills and capabilities.

  • Do you devise and/or deliver go to market strategies?
  • Do you oversee key client accounts, establish relationships or performance manage staff?
  • Do you have a proven record of enhancing customer service?
  • Do you have a qualification that is relevant to the job position?
  • Do you speak multiple languages? If so does that matter for the role?

Closing Statement

You can finish this section with a closing statement that either summarises your softer skills or stating your transferable skills if applying for a promoted role or career change.
